What is the Century Disc?
The Century Disc is a revolutionary new CD-R and DVD-R that is uncomparable to any other disc on the market today. It has a 24-karat Gold top layer that encapsulates and protects the Silver Reflective Layer from atmospheric corrosion and degradation.

The real Silver under-layer is the mirror-like layer that reflects your data back to the laser in your drive(s). The real Silver under-layer is protected by a resin that is applied using the latest technology to apply an Ultra Hard Coat protection to the recorded surface area.

We call this SRS (Scratch-Resistant Surface) Technology. The Century Disc also has a unique printable surface that allows you to print directly to the disc with either an Inkjet (disk compatible) printer or a Thermal printer. Most people do not realize that you shouldn't use a permanent marker to label your discs but, with the Century Disc's unique printable surface, you can. They can even be silk-screened for mass production runs.

Why do you call it the Century Disc?
With the 24-karat Gold top layer encapsulating and protecting the silver reflective layer, the discs are designed to last over 100 years. So, instead of calling it the hundred-year disc (which would be okay too) we call it the Century Disc. Archival Century 100-Year Disc is the legal brand name of this one-of-a-kind product, but we call it the Century Disc for short. There may be similar discs to this one but, there really is only one Archival Century 100-Year Disc available in CD-R and DVD-R formats.

Who makes the Century Disc?
The Century Disc is made by Mitsubishi using the newest equipment and latest technologies available today. The Century Disc is a true MKM (Mitsubishi Kagaku Media, LTD) product.

Do I have to have special equipment to use the Century Disc?
No. That is why the Century Disc uses a real Silver (Au) compatible reflective layer as its recording and playback surface. Most recorders and players are designed to specs using silver or silver alloy type discs. That is why Mitsubishi uses its patented worldwide DRL (Dual Reflective Layer) technology on the Century Discs. The gold protects and the silver reflects, it's simple yet makes sense.

What makes the Century Disc so compatible?
Common CDs and DVDs use a silver layer (or silver alloy of some type) as the reflective layer. This is the main layer that `reflects' the recorded image (whether burned or repicated) back to the red laser. CDs and DVDs use what are called lands and pits, similar to the grooves on a vinyl record (for brevity) to store data. once it is burned/recorded. If the reflective layer has defects or a high level of Block Errors (BLER), then the disc can only continue to slowly deteriorate from there. If the reflective layer uses an Ultra Precise Groove Engineering process, like the Century Disc, then the reflective layer will be superior, last longer, and will perform as it should. The real Silver (Ag) layer, is one of the key features that makes the Century Disc so compatible as any other ordinary CD or DVD.

What makes the Century Disc better than all other discs?

The Century Disc starts out as a near-perfect disc in terms of:

Quality = A++ rated disc, the highest level of quality in CDs and DVDs

Reflectivity = using a real Silver [Ag] layer as opposed to an alloy

Compatability = uses a real Silver reflective layer that CD/DVD lasers are designed to be used with

Longevity = has two protective layers, 24-karat Gold on top and a resin/hard coat on the bottom

Reliability = each disc is one of 25,000 made per production run

Durability = has SRS technology to protect it from scratches, fingerprint smudges, etc

Name Brand Recognition = made by Mitsubishi, a Worldwide leader in optical media

Wobble = all discs have a wobble effect because of the spinning inside the drive and the way disc grooves (lands) are made

Superior Print Surface = this new technology allows use with inkjet and thermal printers

The Century Disc is the disc we thought we were buying in the first place. This is what a disc should be.
(See the `Facts About Ordinary CDs and DVDs'  article for more information on various grade levels of CDs and DVDs).

What is SRS Technology?
SRS Technology stands for Scratch-Resistant Recording Surface Technology. It refers to the ultra hard coat protection resin that is applied to the recording surface of the Century Disc. This resin, when hardened, is up to 100 times stronger than the disc itself.

SRS Technology allows you to drop your discs (accidentally of course) and they will still play, even with the deepest of scratches, mars, and fingerprint smudges. Fingerprint smudges and scratches (the number one causes of DVD failures) can leave a lasting impression on a disc's recording surface. Which can be damaging to the actual recording.

SRS Technology prevents against such contaminents and protects the Century Disc's recording surface for years and years to come.

How can I print on the surface of the Century Disc?
In order to print onto any disc with a printable surface, you need to have a disc capable printer. One that includes a printer tray, or a printer that is designed specifically for printing lable directly onto the surface of a disc. The difference between the Century Disc and other discs is this: with almost ALL other discs, you have to buy printer specific discs. Our printable surface works well in both Inkjet and Thermal type printers. You can even write on them with a felt pen or permanent marker, something you shouldn't do with other discs.

What can I use the Century Discs for?
Century Discs are extraordinary CDs and DVDs. They may have a 24-karat gold layer to help preserve them for over a century, a unique printable surface unlike any other, and a scratch-resistant coating just like the new blu-ray discs, but they work just like all other CDs and DVDs (better, of course). Copy all of your data, images, movie files, music files, and all other forms of media that you would put on any other CD or DVD right onto the Century Disc.
